Reader’s Question:

I discovered that different people seeking insurance quotes are given different auto insurance rates in Idaho. Why is this so? Which companies are offering the most affordable rates right now?

Eleonore

Boise ID

If you’ve gone through the process of asking for a car insurance quote, car insurance quoteyou must be familiar with the information the insurance company asked from you, such as personal information, car details and driving history. These questions are not asked just for the sake of documentation purposes but for the drafting of the automobile insurance rates that will be provided to you.

Your personal details have probably minimal effect on the insurance cost. However, if you are a teenager, you will probably be quoted higher automobile insurance rates due to preconceptions that young drivers are more prone to accidents on the road. In the insurance industry, the higher your risk, the higher your insurance cost.

Second factor is your car details, including car’s model and its purpose. The insurance industry have categorized each car model according to the cost of insurance required. Basically, those in the lower bracket are cars that are low-profile and cheap while those on the higher brackets are usually sports cars and luxury cars. The higher the bracket your car belongs, the higher the automobile insurance rates quoted to you.

In addition, the main purpose of your car can determine the rate of your Idaho automobile insurance. The five major classification of your car according to main purpose are commercial, artesian, business, commute and personal/pleasure. The enumerated items are arranged from highest to lowest rates in terms of insurance cost. Commercial cars are used heavily for business such as cargo trucks. Business are those driven by companies but not used to transport cargoes. Artesian cars are driven by skilled professionals, such as plumbers, to transport materials and tools. Commute cars are used to drive back and forth from home to school or office. The main purpose for personal/pleasure cars is to drive in short distances, such as a drive to the grocery.

Your driving history will also affect rates. New drivers will get higher insurance costs. Those with many road violations will also see their rates higher.

Now that you understand what’ll cause your insurance rates to soar, you may take necessary adjustments regarding your car to get the best deals. Good luck.

Reader’s Question:

Can I have my car registered Idaho and insure that vehicle in California? What are the Idaho auto insurance requirements?

Harold

Boise, ID

According to the ID Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to register a car in Idaho the vehicle must belong to an Idaho resident or business and the car must be titled in Idaho before it can be registered. Idaho residents who are temporarily in a different state (i.e., students or military personnel) may request titles and registrations for their cars through the mail.

If the state of Idaho does not require you to have your car insurance purchased through an Idaho Insurance company then it may be possible to insure the car in California if you are currently residing in California as a non-resident that does not need to register the vehicle there. For example if your permanent address is in Idaho but you are a college student in California your Idaho insurance company may not cover you to be in CA since the car is garaged in CA a majority of the year. You then may be able to acquire California insurance but you will likely need to get limits of 25/50/15 to meet Idaho’s minimum requirements since your car is registered in that state.

So if you want to have your vehicle registered in Idaho and insured in CA you will need check with the ID Department of Motor Vehicle first to make certain it is okay then look for an insurance carrier that would provide you this type of car insurance policy.

Reader’s Question:

I’m just wondering why hybrid cars and high tech cars get higher auto insurance premiums rates here in Idaho. Aren’t we supposed to give these cars extra credit because of their environment-friendly nature?

George

Boise, ID

You have a point, George. I totally agree with you. Auto insurance companies, however, have a different point of view on this. Hybrid cars and high tech autos get high premium rates precisely because of their high tech nature. High-tech or hybrid cars have parts and circuits that are not in regular cars. They have parts that function differently compared to regular cars. Because of this, the parts are more expensive and not usually readily available from your friendly neighborhood auto parts store. When you need to have a hybrid car repaired and some parts need to be replaced, it’s going to cost the insurance company more.

Also, hybrid or high tech cars need “hybrid” mechanics. Hybrid cars are complex creatures and sometimes your usual mechanics may not be able to figure out what’s wrong with your car. You need someone with additional expertise. Mechanics will have to have a different training to handle hybrid or high tech cars. These mechanics’ service fees are not cheap, either. So, hybrid and high tech car parts are more expensive than what we are used, too. These are complex cars and they need mechanics trained specifically for these types of cars. It’s a sort of a field of specialization. And if you’re a car specialist in Idaho, you don’t come cheap.

Reader’s Question:

What is exactly is the difference between comprehensive automobile insurance and collision insurance? I’m Anne from Nampa, Idaho, and I need information. Thanks!

Anne

Nampa, ID

Well, hello, Anne from Nampa, Idaho. I’m Dave, and I’ll be glad to fill your information needs. Let’s start first with collision automotive insurance. It’s the type of insurance that covers you when your car, as the name implies, collides with something, may it be another car or some other inanimate object. You’re also covered for a car rollover, which means literally just that, your car rolling over. For cases like these, the automotive insurance company will pay for the damages up to the car’s fair market value. Fair market value is the price that the car would get in the current market place, provided that both buyer and seller are informed about the property and are free from trade pressures. Simply put, it’s how much the car would sell at the time. Additionally, collision insurance policies work on a no-fault basis, meaning that you are covered regardless of whose fault it is.

Comprehensive insurance, on the other hand is the type that protects you from damages that are caused by everything else apart from collisions. Hence, the name comprehensive. Instances of such are fortuitous events, like flood or earthquakes, vandalism or theft. But of course, you have to read your policy carefully to know the exact details of your insurance plan.

What do you think the penalty for a second ticket for driving without insurance insurance ticket in the state of Idaho? Am I going to Jail?

Rick

Nampa, ID

The Idaho driver’s manual states that if you violate ID insurance laws, you will, for the first violation, be required to provide proof of financial responsibility for a year. If you commit a second violation in a 5-year period, you will be required to provide proof of financial responsibility for 3 years. The acceptable form of proof of financial responsibility is a certified statement of liability auto insurance coverage from your insurance company which is an SR-22 certificate.

The state of Idaho laws states that driving without car insurance is an infraction punishable by a fine of $75.00 for any individual to violate the provisions of this section for the first time. A second and any subsequent conviction for a violation within a period of 5 years shall be a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not exceeding $1,000, or by jail time in the county jail not exceeding 6 months, or both.

As you can see a fine and possibly jail time for driving without insurance in Nampa Idaho. I sure hope you do not see jail time, as that seems extreme for your case

Reader’s Question:

I just hit a deer in my vehicle and was wondering how much the damage would have to be for the insurance carrier in Pocatello, ID to total the vehicle. Is it the suggested retail value of the vehicle or half of it?

Bill

Pocatello, ID

When an insurance appraiser calculates the damages to your vehicle, he or she will determine how much it will cost to repair the vehicle. The repair appraisal is similar to the “blue book” value of your vehicle. The blue book value is the retail value or the fair market value of the car. So, how much would you have to pay a auto dealer or person for a vehicle as similar as possible to yours. If the cost of repairing your vehicle exceeds the fair market value, the vehicle is considered totaled.

If your vehicle is determined to be totaled, and if you think that the fair market value offered by the insurance company in Pocatello, ID is too low, you get more information. Get signed statements from car dealers that say the value of your vehicle. Look in the classified ad section of the newspaper for cost of vehicles similar to yours. You may use this information to negotiate a fairer settlement for you. Always obtain the information you need to support your case.

Reader’s Question:

My 17 year old daughter just got her license, do I have to place her in my car insurance policy in Post Falls Idaho?

Howard

Post Falls, ID

Insurance carrier’s guidelines vary so you will need to contact your insurance broker or agent to check if your insurance company will require your daughter to be put on your car insurance policy. Generally most insurance companies do require you to put your child on your car insurance policy, either after they have received their provisional license or full license. When they need to be placed on as a driver differs from one insurer to another.

Adding a teenage driver to your insurance policy usually increases your car insurance rates by quite a bit since they are inexperienced and prone to be in more accidents. So when adding your daughter to your insurance policy verify with your insurance company about any possible discounts you can get. Many insurance providers offer a good student discount. You may also check if your insurance carrier offers discounts if your daughter takes a driver education class.
